Seeking Christ-like Humility

Read

Philippians 2:1-17

Pray

Lord, forgive me for my pride. Forgive me for thinking that I am usually right and for, more often than not, seeking my way instead of what’s best for others. Thank you, that despite my sins, you have encouraged me with your grace, you have given me comfort with your love, you have had compassion on me when I didn’t deserve it, and you sacrificed your son so I could have eternal life with you.

As Paul commands, help me to be like-minded with other believers so I do not stir-up conflict and turn people away from you. Help me to love others as you love them rather than picking and choosing who to love based on some selfish set of standards the world has taught me. May the love I show others be recognized as your love and draw them to love you in return.

God, stop me from acting out of my own selfish ambitions and vain conceits. Let me act to lift you up, to bring you glory, and to further your kingdom, not to make one for myself. Teach me to be humble so that I would value others above myself and would do all I can to work for others’ interests, not worrying about how that work would meet or hinder my interests.

Help me to be more like your son who did not get offended when you asked him to be the one to strip himself of his glory to come to Earth to serve and teach mankind and then endure such a humiliating and gruesome death so that there could be reconciliation between you and your children.  Wow! What an example to follow. And now look where he sits – at your right hand, with all of his glory restored, as the King of all kings!

Transform my desires so my utmost purpose and goal in life would be to serve you and do your will out of humble adoration of you and deep gratitude to you. Then I will joyfully respond and never would a complaint escape my lips. I want to be your blameless and pure child, Father God. Give me the faith to trust you to see to my interests so that I can spend my efforts seeing to others’ interests. And just like you raised Jesus to his rightful glory, I can trust that you will lift me into new life, into the presence of your glory. Amen.
