The Great Commission. What is that?
Simply, the last words that were spoken to the disciples by Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew.
It reads, “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you, and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
A recent study by Barna shows that over half of churchgoers had not even heard of The Great Commission. Even more, of those who had heard of The Great Commission, only 40% of them responded with an accurate description of The Great Commission. Other studies conducted by Barna showed similar results in the lack of knowledge of The Great Commission.
So why is the Great Commission so important?
It gives a direct command to every follower of Christ to act upon missions, and it provides a perfect yet tangible method of spreading the word of God. As God has brought us to Him by being discipled, it becomes our responsibility to disciple others. It could be argued that this message could be pointed to when a new follower asks, “I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, now what?” This statement by Christ is not just for the new followers; it is a command that is focused on spiritual growth in all followers of Christ and the expansion of the Kingdom.
The Great Commission is not just a catchphrase thrown into a Sunday message or a buzzword Christians use in casual conversation. Instead, it is a powerful command to all followers to embark on a lifelong journey of discipleship and discipling.
