Baptism

What is baptism?

Christian baptism by the immersion in water is (1) your symbolic identification with the death and resurrection of Jesus (Romans 6; Colossians 2:12), and (2) a clear expression of a repentant life to God (1 Peter 3:21). When you are lowered under the water, it signifies identifying with Jesus dying for your sins. Coming up out of the water identifies with his resurrection to newness of life, just as the believer has a new life in Christ (Galations 3:27).

Who can be baptized?

The only requirement for baptism is that you place your full trust in the person and work of Jesus in an ongoing relationship with Him. Baptism is the outward symbol of an inward reality that has taken place in any individual's life who has decided to follow Jesus (Acts 2:38; 8:36-38; Matthew 28:19,20).

The Bible says nobody is perfect; we have all messed up (Romans 3:10, 23).

The cost of sin is death and separation from God (Romans 6:23, Isaiah 59:2).

Do we baptize children or infants?

We do not baptize infants because they are not capable of making a conscious decision to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior (1 Peter 3:21). We do not have a set age for children to be baptized; however, we rely on the judgment of parents in deciding when a child is ready. However, we do have dedication ceremonies for infants and children.

Does baptism make me a member of this church?

No, it does not. You do not have to become a member of Timberline Church to be baptized. You will not necessarily become a member once you have been baptized. However, baptism is a requirement for official membership at Timberline Church. Membership in our church requires a formal application process and approval by our church elders.

A one-time required class is the Sunday before each Baptism Weekend. We offer the class for adults/teens and for children (with their parents/legal guardian) to take a closer look at the process of baptism. For those who would simply like to learn more about baptism, feel free to drop in at any of our classes without registering.
